This just in from THR!

Strong reviews and a $10 million opening was enough for Dimension Films to get working on a sequel of Piranha 3-D. The studio confirmed today that plans for another bloody gore fest are in the works with director Alexandre Aja and producer Mark Canton re-teaming with Dimension. “We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving Piranha 3-D, but cheering for it,” says Canton. “And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”

What would said sequel look like? No plotline has yet been decided, but Aja, when interviewed a couple weeks back, said the team has been throwing around a lot of different story lines. “We had many ideas, like the full moon party in Thailand — a huge event with like 200,00 young people from all around the world taking mushrooms and partying on the beach.” Ahh, a perfect environment for man-eating fish. Hopefully Jess can return for the sequel! I haven’t seen the film yet so I have no clue about her character’s fate.

Aja: “Jessica is trying to fight the piranha and I had to give her some direction, because the piranha are CGI. She had to fight invisible fish jumping out of the water, so she had to use a lot of imagination. I had to spend so much time in the water. And not only me, the whole crew. We were all in wetsuits. It was cold even in the desert in the summer. Because no matter how hot it is, when you’re in the water past five, six hours, you get cold. So everyone was in wetsuits, and it was almost night, and Jessica was very tired. She’d fought imaginary piranha all day long.”

If Ving Rhames is onscreen, he’s gonna throw down with power tools a la Pulp Fiction. It’s easy, and it kinda works. No one sees a film called Piranha 3D for dialogue.
