[MTV.com] On the one hand, catching an advance screening of “Avatar” meant I didn’t have to deal with New York’s get-to-the-theater-an-hour-early-’cause-we’re-just-annoying-like-that crowds. On the other hand, I missed an opportunity to check out the trailer for “Piranha 3-D” that played before James Cameron’s CG retelling of “Pocahontas.” For that, I am sad.
But “Piranha” star Jessica Szohr of “Gossip Girl” fame roused my spirits at the red carpet premiere of “Youth in Revolt” when she talked up director Alexandre Aja’s “phenomenal” vision and gave us a sneak peak at one super scary scene in the upcoming film.
The plotline is pleasantly, pulpily thin: college kids invade a sun-and-sex spring break spot, a volcanic eruption unleashes a swarm of flesh-eating prehistoric piranhas. In three dimensions. Szohr plays a local girl persuaded by Jerry O’Connell’s character to take a ride on a sort of “Girls Gone Wild” party boat. The booze flows, the bikini tops come off, and then the angry fishies arrive. Filming the scene was no fun at all, Szohr told us.
“I get claustrophobic, so when we were in a boat I was kind of halfway under water at one point and it was like a really small little cage,” she said. “I was freaking out actually. I was like, ‘I can’t breathe! I can’t get out of here!’”
But she survived, they wrapped the picture (out in April) and now the 24-year-old actress is back on the set of “Gossip Girl.” That show I really couldn’t give a crap about. But “Piranha”? I’m pumped. Why? It might have something to do with how co-star Paul Scheer described the schlocky flick when MTV News visited the set in June.
“I think this is going to be the most boobs and blood in any motion picture of all time,” he said.
