People Magazine Preview

[thumb:2448:l]  People Magazine is giving us a preview of their 100 Most Beautiful list and you guess it the cast of Gossip Girl made the cut (as if there was ever any doubt).  Jess is featured in the article and shoot.

THE GOSSIP GIRL CAST
Onscreen, they are gorgeous, scheming, backstabbing high schoolers. Off-screen, Blake Lively, Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick, Jessica Szohr, Penn Badgley, Leighton Meester and Taylor Momsen (clockwise from bottom) are still gorgeous but somewhat kinder to one another. “I assure you,” says Badgley, “we are all fun and charming as hell.”

I’ve added a MQ image of the shoot and what to expect in the gallery so view that when you can and I’ll have the scan for you very quick once I go see if we have it extra early at the library.

Jessica was also mentioned by another 100-Lister, Miss Rumer Willis, here’s what she said:

 RUMER WILLIS
“I grew up with a mom that most moms don’t look like,” says the 19-year-old star of the summer comedy The House Bunny. But with a little help from mom Demi Moore, and a some experimentation, she’s finding her own way: “There’s a cool Korean spa my mom found in L.A. I go with my best friend, [Gossip Girl's] Jessica Szohr. That and getting my nails done are my biggest indulgences.”

One More – BuddyTV Interview

I just got home from school and found this little piece of info in my inbox.  Check the new interview with BTV:

Jessica Szohr plays the best friend of Gossip Girl leading man Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley).  Her character, Vanessa Abrams, is Dan’s childhood best friend who has returned to New York, realizing that she is in love with Dan.  Naturally, this throws a wrench into his budding relationship with Upper East Side princess Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively).

Jessica spoke to BuddyTV today and promised us that there will be much more in store for her and the rest of the gang as the rest of the season of Gossip Girl continues.  She also shared with us the unusual way she got cast on the show, as well as some other interesting tidbits about her life.  Below, you will find the audiofile and a complete transcript of the interview.

This is Debbie at BuddyTV, and today I’m talking to Jessica Szohr, who plays Vanessa Abrams on Gossip Girl.  Hey, Jessica.  How are you doing?

I’m doing well.  How are you?

I’m fine.  First, I wanted to ask you how you ended up getting cast on Gossip Girl.

I have a friend that works at an agency and had called me and said, “Oh, on Gossip Girl, there’s a few episode, and it shoots in New York.”  And at this time in my life, I kind of wanted to leave L.A. for a little while, and I was thinking of going to New York.  And she goes, “You know should try to get in on it and see.”  I didn’t have the attitude like, “Oh my God, if I get in the room, I’m going to book it,” but I was like, “At least I should try and see if they’ll give me a shot.”  Things didn’t work out for a couple weeks, didn’t work out for a couple weeks, then they were going to do a local hire in New York.  And then, I went to a barbecue with two of my friends, not knowing where exactly.  It was just a few people at a house, and it ended up being [creator] Josh Schwartz’s house.  Absolutely nothing comes up about work or about any of his work or anything.  We were eating by the pool and hanging out outside.  It was Memorial Weekend of last year, in May.  Two days later, I left and my manager called me and said, “You know that role on Gossip Girl?  Well, apparently the executive producers, they would like you to go to the Warner Brothers lot tomorrow, and then go on tape, and they’re going to send it to the other producers in New York, and if you book it, you start working on Monday.”  I was like, “Okay.”  So I went and auditioned and then came to do a few episodes, and now I’m here for good.

Cool.  That’s awesome.  Maybe to catch people up on the show a bit, since it was on hiatus for a while, can you talk about what your character is like?

I play a girl, Vanessa Abrams, from Brooklyn, who is Dan Humphrey’s childhood best friend.  And she moved away with her parents to Vermont and comes back and confessed her love to Dan Humphrey, and realizes that he is on a whole other page from when she left New York.  And she came back and is working on a documentary, and has a job at this little cafe in Brooklyn.  She doesn’t really understand or get the whole world of these Upper East Sider kids, and that’s basically her in a nutshell.  Where there’s a lot of stuff underneath the nutshell, but that’s the nutshell.

Actually, in the book series that the show was based on, there are a lot of difference right from the beginning.  Have you read the books?  Do you know if they are going to incorporate some of the things about Vanessa?

I took a couple of books to read on the plane to kind of make a backstory for her, and when I was reading the script, they took some of the storylines and obviously the names of the characters, but the writers and the executive producers were doing something different with the show than with the book.  I read enough to know who these kids are and where they come from, and then I just went along with the script and what we were given with that.  But yes, Vanessa was very different.  Vanessa shaves her head in the books, wears combat boots and has a ton of piercings, and I have a full head of curly, frizzy hair.

Are you personally like Vanessa at all?  Do you identify with your character?

I think out of all the characters on the show, personally, I could relate to Vanessa the most.  I come from Wisconsin, so living in New York, and especially on the Upper East Side, is very different from where I grew up.  Mostly, personally, I could relate to Vanessa, which is great because that’s who I’m playing.

So, she was first introduced into the series to sort of meddle in Serena and Dan’s relationship.  Is that going to continue?  Or will you be getting another love interest?  Can you sort of give us a clue about what’s to come?

Vanessa, I think, finally had to support their relationship and knew that Dan was going to be happy with Serena.  I think it was hard for her to swallow it, but you gotta do what you gotta do.  And Vanessa ends up really enjoying Serena’s company and thinks that she’s making Dan happy.  Vanessa does get to know someone that does go to their school.  As she’s doing her documentary, she realizes that one of the guys isn’t totally that world.  He lives there and comes from money and all that, but she realizes that he’s also different than them.  And they start to hang out a little bit.  I’m not sure if they’ll end up dating or become really good friends, but she really enjoys his company.

I can’t wait to see that.

Yeah, a lot of fun stuff is coming up.

Oh great.  This is seriously one of my favorite shows, so I’m just excited for any details that you can give me.

All I have to say is, with the last five episodes before we end season 1.  It was supposed to be originally nine episodes, so they’ve crammed nine episodes into five.  [There are] weddings, people coming out with their sexuality, and a lot of stuff.

Awesome.  So let’s talk about fashion.  Vanessa’s style is very urban chic, as opposed to Blair who’s more preppy.  How much influence do you get to have on what Vanessa wears?

When I first booked the role, Eric Damon and a couple of the other costume designers on the show said, “You know, she’s very piercings and goth a little bit, in the books and all that.  Let’s make her Lower East Side, Brooklyn, funky, bohemian, earthy kind of girl.”  I think it’s so fun because Vanessa dresses a lot different than I do in real life, so it’s fun when they give me all these patterns and bright shoes and all that.  So there’s times when I see a certain outfit, and I go, “Oh, can we do this, or can we do that?”  They try to tie it in a little bit, but they’re so good at what they do, so I always trust their instincts.

I was going to ask you next what your personal style is like when you’re off the set.

I really like jeans and T-shirts, to be honest.  I had these moccasins that I got from Rite-Aid for two dollars.  They were $1.99, and I lived in them to the point where, when I lost them, I got so upset.  I thought, “I’m never going to find them.”  Because you know when you where something all the time and it fits you perfect.  But yeah, jeans and T-shirts is pretty much what I like.  And flip-flops.

What’s it like filming Gossip Girl in New York?

That’s probably one of the parts parts about it.  The city is so amazing.  It has a different feel than L.A. does.  It’s fun.  There’s great energy here.  And it reminds me a little bit of home, not because it’s a big city or anything because I grew up in a very small town, but just the weather.  One minute, it’s really sunny, and the next it could be raining.  You never really know.  When you live in L.A., you take the sunny weather for granted a little bit.  I was like, “I can go to the beach all the time,” and I’d go to the beach once a year.  So, it’s been awesome, and the city has been so wonderful to the show, and letting us film all over.  It’s been great.

Cool, cool.  What scenes or project have you done that you’re most proud of.  Not just from Gossip Girl, but from your past?  What things have you worked on that you really count as one of your big accomplishments?

It’s hard as an actress because if I see work that I do, I always nitpick it apart so badly.  So I don’t know.  It was a big step for me when I first booked my first series regular job after going through all the testing with the executives and going in these rooms with 40 people in suits just staring at you.  You’re so nervous doing it.  I was shaking before.  So, once I booked that, it was a big step for me.  But I still have a lot to learn, and I want to keep growing as an actor, so I don’t know if that answers your question.

You just turned 23 about a month ago.  Happy belated birthday.

Thank you so much.

How did you spend it?

A couple of my friends from New York got together for dinner and hung out.  It was kind of low-key, and it was fun.  Good friends, good people, good food, and it was fun.

Awesome.  And finally, besides Gossip Girl, are you a fan of any other TV shows?

I was sent a bunch of pilots last year, so I got to see pilots before they were aired, and I really enjoyed Dirty Sexy Money.  I really, really like The Office.  I’ve only seen a couple of episodes, and I’m like, “Oh my gosh, it’s my favorite show.”  So now I have the DVDs and I’m catching up on all of them, but I think it’s really funny.  And I don’t know if you’ve ever seen It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia?  It’s hilarious.  So I want to say, those three right now.

Cool, cool.  Well, I am so looking forward to seeing you on Gossip Girl.  Thank you so much for taking the time out to talk to me.

Thank you so much.

We Gossip with GOSSIP GIRL Star Jessica Szohr

Hey guy, here’s another interview Jess gave about her return to Gossip Girl since the strike.  Get ready for NV!  Check it out…

On Friday, the TV Addict had the opportunity to talk with actress Jessica Szohr, better known around these parts as Dan’s best friend Vanessa on everybody’s favorite guilty pleasure GOSSIP GIRL. The following is what Szohr [pronounced Zee-oh-ar] spilled on what the cast is really like, those Nate and Vanessa rumors and how she’s handling all the media attention surrounding the show.

How did you break into acting?
I grew up in Wisconsin, modeling and doing commercials. I never thought acting was a realistic dream. But in my senior year of High School, my parents sat me down and asked if I really wanted to go to College, or was I just doing it for them. So with their blessing, I decided to go out to Los Angeles for pilot season.

What was it like joining the show part way into the first season?
I was super nervous. I’d seen the pilot, so joining the show four episodes in [episode 104/105] was like being the new kid at school. But everyone was so welcoming and sweet.

On-screen we know that you’re Dan’s BFF [Best Friend Forever], but whom would you say you’ve become closest with off-camera? Who’s your off-screen Dan?
We’ve all become close in certain ways, but I’d definitely say off screen I’m closest with Ed [Chuck Bass]

How are you finding all the media attention surrounding the show?
It’s very interesting. You don’t realize that aside from acting, there is this whole other side. Photo shoots, interviews, it gets a little complicated. It’s not really my place to talk about everybody’s personal life. Vanessa, Dan, Nate I’m more than happy to talk about.

Any interesting fan experiences in New York?
I forget that I’m on a show people watch. If people do recognize me, I usually think they need directions to the subway! There are a couple of fans that come to the set everyday and stand around and watch. Which is a little weird. But we need the fans, so I think we all try our best when people are watching.

So what can you tell me about Vanessa and Nate, there’s been an awful lot of rumor, not to mention photos, swirling around online.
Growing up in Brooklyn Vanessa is from a completely different world. She doesn’t really understand the the Upper East Side — limos, jets, parents worth billions. She works at a normal job in a café. But with Nate, she sees a guy who’s not completely part of that world either. Nate’s not self-involved and I think Vanessa tries to reach out with him, to become friends.

Maybe more…
[Laughs] I’m not sure what I can really say. But in the season finale, Vanessa goes to her first society function and things get pretty interesting.

Do you know where the character of Vanessa will be heading in the second season?
We’re just wrapping up the season finale and we’re back in June so I don’t even think they’ve started writing the second season. But the writers are so good at what they do. I mean, they wrote THE OC. So I trust them completely.

GOSSIP GIRL fans, don’t miss the return of Vanessa tonight at 8PM on the CW.

Don’t forget to catch it.  I’ll be in class doing my LAST final for the semester and embarking on a nice 3 month break and bringing you guys loads of Jessica news and media.

‘Gossip Girl’s’ Jessica Szohr Teases About Upcoming Episodes

Gossip GirlThings are getting hot on “Gossip Girl,” and we had the chance to chat with Jessica Szohr, who plays Dan’s best friend Vanessa. With only five episodes left in the season, Szohr (pronounced Zee-oh-ar) gave us the scoop about a surprising love interest, fitting in with rich kids, and the appearance of the witchy Georgina.

I was wondering if you knew there was a poll online about whether your hair looked better curly or straight.
I didn’t know that!

Is that weird to you?
That’s really weird! I’m nervous.

It was split down the middle. People love it either way, I guess.
Ok. That’s funny.

Your character, Vanessa, seemed very patient after Dan decided not to get back together with her. Does she still have any feelings for Dan?
Deep down I think she’s always going to have a soft spot for him and a place in her heart for him. They were best friends, and she came back basically to profess her love for him. I think out of respect for him and how much she cares for him she’ll just have to deal with Serena and him dating. I think she’ll always have a soft spot for him. She cares about him enough that him being with someone else…she’ll have to deal with it. I think all girls go through that at one time in their lives. It’s never fun, but sometimes it is what it is and you have to deal with it.

Are there going to be any other love interests for Vanessa?
Someone has definitely caught her eye. It is someone on the upper East side. I don’t know if they’ll work out, if they’ll date, or if they’ll become just friends. She realized when she was making the documentary that he was different than all of his friends that live on the upper East side. And she always put him in that category when she heard about him or would see him, but when she went back and was editing her documentary she realized, wait, he is different and he seems pretty cool. They hang out a little bit, some things happen, but I’m not sure if it will work out. They are from two totally different worlds.

Vanessa has always resisted the prep school lifestyle. She filmed a documentary about it, but that was an outsider looking in. Will she continue to scorn the life of the upper East siders or is she going to try to start fitting into that?
I think Vanessa holds her own and will not give into that world. She is who she is and doesn’t want to change for people. I think for the character and the demographic, the younger girls who watch, I think it’s great. You also see what Jenny goes through when she tries to change and all the consequences that it brings. I don’t think that Vanessa will give into that. I think she’s going to stay who she is and whether they accept her or not, I think that’s how she’s going to be. Even if she ends up dating this guy from the upper East side I still think she’s going to be who she is from Brooklyn and not give into that.

What does Dan think about this new development with Vanessa and this other guy?
We’ve had conversations about it, and I think he was a little caught off guard. Also, there’s so much going on with his relationship with Serena. Some people from Serena’s past show up. Their relationship goes on the rocks for a little bit, they work it out, things go on. There’s so much going on and he cares about Serena so much that he wants to know about this guy but at the same time he’s like, I got to work out my stuff too.

Do you have any scoop about Michelle Trachtenberg’s new character Georgina?
She is vicious, man! She leads Dan and I to believe something that is so not true. She definitely comes in and stirs up a lot of stuff. She brings up a lot from Serena’s past and causes a lot of drama and a lot of things with a lot of different relationships. It’s interesting. And Michelle was amazing. She’s a great actress and so friendly. It was weird to see her go from being her to putting on this Georgina role.

Do you have any other scoop about the remaining episodes this year?
We have five that come on until the season ends. It was supposed to be nine episodes, so they basically crammed them into five. There are so many things that are happening. We would get the script and I would call Leighton (Meester) or Chace (Crawford), Blake (Lively) or Ed (Westwick) or somebody and be like, oh my God did you see what’s going on? Oh, my God, wait, this is happening? I would read through them so fast it was like, I can’t believe this is what’s going on! It will definitely keep everyone on their toes…a lot of shocking moments.

Possible Future Project For Jess?

Thanks to JSN reader Laura, we now have information on a possible future project for Jessica titled, “Slightly Single In LA.”  The site Free Fall Films lists Jessica among other up and coming Hollywood stars like, Ian Somerhalder (Lost) and Rumer Willis, as being in talks about the production.  We’ll keep you updated if Jessica signs on to this project.  Here’s some information on the project:

Dale Squire (Rumer Willis) is a hip, quirky, independent single gal living in the glossy city of Los Angeles.  She makes ends meet by working in the obscure world of reality television, while pursuing her passion as a photographer. After several failed attempts in quasi-relationships, Dale comes to the conclusion that finding a meaningful relationship in L.A. is impossible.  After all, a girl can only take so many toe sucking fashion photographers and star seeking personal trainer half timers. And in Los Angeles, there are many of these men.  But being anti-social is tough for any young girl in Hollywood, and with Dale’s entourage – Jill: a high maintenance ex-soap star who is obsessed with her wedding, Becca: an honest C-list actress, waiting for her big break in Hollywood, Seven: Dale’s gay, flamboyant (but also voice of reason) housemate, and Hallie: a super sexy, laid back, jewelry designer – she is lucky to have such a reliable group of friends, in a city where it’s easy to get lost. With Jill’s frantic wedding right around the corner, Dale finds herself reflecting on the significance of marriage, and the mutual respect needed for a successful relationship. When Zach, a successful heartthrob actor and old friend of Dale’s, finds his way back into her life, Dale slowly starts to think that maybe finding love in L.A. is possible – only problem is that her realization might have come too late, leaving Dale in a silent love triangle, with no way out.
